Nope it's a bug, dropping or using an item you just bought gives you half its gold cost instantly

1300 replay time tree uses bug to get free gold.
1930 tree bug abuses again.
2210 tree again bug abuse.
2615 tree again bug abuse.
major bug abuse here. you can sell branches and make like 1000 gold per inventory fill. zzzzz please fix asap.

The replay you linked is from 6.83g, this has already been fixed, 6.83J is already released.
